The old male elephant above is too weak to get to his feet. So lions slowly eat him alive. The
suffering of the elephant is indescribable. Currently, we consider it unethical to intervene, but
morally acceptable to photograph and observe. By contrast, if the victim belonged to our own
species, mere observation would be ethically unacceptable and intervention mandatory.
